DEAD TREE ADVANTAGES

David Adesnik, writing at Oxblog:

Even though I'm a blogger, I'll take paper over pixels any day. You can carry it from room to room, you don't have to plug it in, you can flip back and forth from page to page, you can read it from any angle, you can spill coffee on it. What's not to love?

THE TOP SOURCE

Depending in how you feel about blogs, this is either proof the world is changing or proof that Google's "editor-free" news service really has problems.

As of 8:42 this morning, the top headline on Google News was a blog. That's a first as far as I know. The algorithms have spoken, and the most relevant source of news on the 2004 Presidental debate isn't a "news organization," it's a guy with a brain and a text editor.

The post, at unmediated.org, was accompanied by a screen shot of the "Top Headline," which was last night's U.S. presidential debate. The top headline referred to was My Thoughts: I believe Kerry won the debate and the source was Daily Kos.

I don't have a problem with a blog as a top news source, but I do have a problem with a piece of opinion writing showing up as the lead item under the "Top News" category.

BEST OF WORLD PRESS

CBC.ca is co-hosting the World Press 2004 photo exhibit in Toronto and has mounted an online gallery of 21 of the images from photojournalists from around the world.

The images represent the best from over 4,000 submitted to the annual competition, from photojournalists in more than 124 countries, according to the press release at the CBC site. And this is how much photojournalism has changed: slightly more than 80% were digital.

A warning before you head over to take a look: the world is not always a pretty place and some of these images are graphic and terrible. If you are easily offended, skip the site.
