Bathing Beauties! [Posted by Kim] When my co-worker and friend Jenny told me she'd never swam laps for exersize, I knew it was my calling to take her and teach her the ropes. First we went shopping, got her first Speedo, some good goggles and her first swim cap. When we got to the pool, I found out that she's actually a pretty good swimmer, she had me fooled. Being a pool rat when you're a kid pays off, trust me I know. Look how cute she looks in her new cap and suit!

A decade has past since his suicide [posted by ZelderBar] Clearly, there are generational markers that seperate one generation from the next. In 1994, Kim and I were seniors in high school. Flannel shirts were in. Pearl Jam still had videos on MTV, and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain represented us (whether he wanted to or whether he actually did is a different discussion). On April 5th, 1994 (corrected date), Cobain committed suicide bringing a generation who felt lost to wonder if it was possible to figure things out at all. 9/11 may mark the most significant historic event of our lives, preceeded by the Challenger disaster or maybe the fall of the Berlin Wall. But, there is little question that Cobain's death is something that shaped how we viewed our heros. The first time I heard Nirvana was in Dean's car on the Osco slab. Chad had it on cassette. He had just purchased it with Nate Boberg. It was late 1991 or early 1992. I thought that surely rock music had never been like this before. This marked the way popmusic would remain forever, which is probably how you are supposed to feel the first time you hear the music that would be so important to your generation. (Tonight Chad informed me that Nevermind was actually recorded in his current home town of Van Nuys, CA.) Now I look back on Cobain's death with sadness, but I don't think I can quite give the martyr status that I once did. As April 5th approaches, keep an eye out for the inevitable articles and tributes and teary-eyed devotes.

"Best. War. EVAH!"[posted by ZelderBar] The Bush-Cheney campaign created the "Sloganator" as a tool for supporters to create their own Bush-Cheney posters. Since this tool was publically available, critics used this tool to generate ironic posters. Naturally, the Republicans had to pull this tool, since more critics were using it than supporters. In the spirit of preservation, this Sloganator Memorial Montage was created so that we can remember the best of the best posters. Some of these are pretty funny. (Note: you will need Flash to view these. The file is 1.7mb, so it may take a second to load on some connections, but it's worth the wait.) (I found this on Cory Doctorow's blog Boing Boing.net
