note on candidates forum

May 18th attended forum hosted by Experiment in Self Reliance and the Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Mostly conservative religious crowd, racially mixed. About 50 attendees plus 11 candidates. Candidates majority republican. All seemed to be admirers of the Bush administration. Three republican 5th US House District primary contenders. They were all in remarkable agreement on all the issues.

I was the only person opposed to the war.

I mentioned the communist election story and the fighting in Viet Nam based on a presidential lie story.

The audience seemed pretty passive towards all caniddates. No applause or boos and hisses.

It was a difficult format. Got a two minute intro. I tried to talk about the history of the LPNC but only got up to about 1996.

Then there were four questions.

Rate pres Bush and his admin

What to do about the state budget deficit

How to take care of poor

How to bring jobs to NC

I only got aminute and a half for each of the answers.

In the first I rated bush poorly and mentioned the war telling about the presidential lie that was the basis for Viet Nam.

On the budget I began by noting that an unbalanced budget was a violation of the NC Constitution and mentioning that the demopublicans did nto seem to have a problem obeying the law the people had made. I went on to mention several other clauses of the NC Constitutiuon that were being violated Article I Secs 19 and 20 and Article VI Section 6.

For helping the poor I noted that their charitable works put the govts to shame and I said I would cut taxes and put the money for charitable acts back in the hands of people who knew how to use it properly.

And to bring jobs I returned to the theme of how much better our economy would be if the federal govt had not taken a huindred billion to blow up Iraq and then another hundred billion to rebiuld iraq and then another hundred billion to occupy Iraq. I mentioned how many jobs that would fund here at home.

Anyway I found out just how short a minute and a half is. Roughly time enough for two and half platitudes. It was good to face a non libertarian crowd and a good practice run.
