http://Unbelievable! Why aren't these commissioners throw out on their arses?/

BarryC writes"

Either all the complainers are a very vocal minority, or the people running this show are completely ignoring the people they serve and are motivated by ego and greed. I wonder if Mr. Zoner would be so gung-ho if he own! ed a home on one of these golf courses and stood to lose tens of thousands of dollars just on the persistent rumors of this M-5 expansion (let's call a duck a duck). Should the road become reality, losing tens of thousands would be a blessing - in actuality it would be much worse because nobody is going to buy a house within several blocks of this freeway, unless you're practically giving it away. A home is every lucky home owners biggest investment and blowing a highway through somebody's front yard is ultimately no different than what the crooks from Enron did to the futures, including retirement, of the people under their auspices. And to what end? So somebody on their way to Great Lakes Crossing can extend their race through Commerce for one more mile (or 51 seconds at the VERY conservative estimated M-5 pace of 70 MPH), only to clog the local residential roads one mile further north. Make no mistake, it doesn't stop with the "Martin Rd expansion". This should be the concern of every homeowner within 1/2 a mile of the ultimate plan - a direct 5-lane monstrosity extending M-5 all the way through M-59. This problem is coming to the doorstep, literally in thousands of cases, to home owners in Commerce, West Bloomfield, White Lake and Waterford. Hopefully those other 3 communities have the strength to fight off Zoner and his cronies. Rather than making it more convenient for people to use our communities as their commuter routes, we should be looking at more constructive methods of discouraging that behavior. Force people on to the existing highways and 5 lane roads, that's why they're there and those property owners unfortunately already paid the price so we could all have a more convenient trip to work. Anyone who's in favor of this plan should take stock of themselves and remember the Golden Rule. Maybe these open green spaces would be better served! as public parks or some other use that doesn't ruin our "lakes community", one of the last remaining jewels in SE Michigan.

The Detroit News - 6 hours ago -
The township's Downtown Development Authority wants to extend Martin Road one mile south to Pontiac Trail, essentially creating an extention of M-5, which carries 24,000 cars a day through Commerce

Well, finally someone other than the DDA and city government has recognized the transparency  of calling the M-5 extension the "Martin Road extension."   The Martin Road extension is, in reality,  the continuation of the highway through a predominately residential area. The funny thing is, if you read the DDA circular and articles in the Spinal Column,  you probably thought the highway was a done deal. But, it seems that a little detail was  that the State of Michigan (owning the land to make that a reality) was never mentioned. When you add the earlier detail of the state saying "no" to Commerce when the original road was developed, plus the statement made recently to the Detroit News,  we begin to wonder what was going through the heads of all involved -- spending tax dollars on something they did not own. That's like having me finance a new home plan on my neighbor's property.

But wait, maybe they do have a plan to get the land. We heard a rumor that the township may attempt to engage the considerable resources of the Taubman organization to obtain the access rights as a possible condition for the sale of the land.  It has been mentioned that they are well connected in the state government . We also understand that the Taubman organization would be satisfied with an access road by the Wall-mart exiting off Haggerty Road verses funding the M-5 extension. So we get into a chicken and egg scenario, as we hear that the Taubman organization is  waiting for the status of the road before making an investment decision. Yet Taubman seems to be OK with the access road. So what is really holding up the decision?  Is this duck a cooked goose?
