Outlook does import MBOX format after all.

The person that contacted me from Microsoft suggested that there was a hack that could be employed to get Outlook importing MBOX format messages. It seems Eudora's mail format is mbox, and so that hack centered around getting Eudora to import the messages from my old Linux Evolution mail client, and then import from Eudora into Outlook.

I did run into some snags with this, but by and large they were right. The process was relatively simple. When you download and set up Eudora it creates a file called in.mbx. This can be replaced with the MBOX file from your mail client of choice. When Eudora restarts it spots that it's own indexes and table of contents information is wrong and rebuilds them. Great stuff. It was suggested that I didn't need to install Eudora at all, but just renamed my files to in.mbx and import them directly into Outlook. I couldn't get this to work, but I may have been missing something. The other thing I couldn't get to work was the latest version of Outlook importing from Eudora. It was late at night and I was very tired, so again I probably missed something.

The somewhat convoluted route that I took involved installing Eudora, replacing the in.mbx file with my own mbox file and then restart Eudora and shut it down straight away. Outlook Express was then used to load the messages from Eudora, and Outlook 2003 finally used to import from Outlook Express. I had about 20 mbox files so it took a while to get them all into Outlook Express but it was worth it. I now have all 20, 574 emails from the past few years in one location, my email client of choice, Outlook 2003. I've got to say though that having never used Eudora at all it did look kinda tempting to switch over when I saw some of the stuff that it can do. I'm not sure I can sync Eudora with my Treo though so I'll stick with the Outlook I know and love.
