Fear is the mind's knowledge of the body's weaknesses. Courage is the mind's knowledge of the body's strengths. The original Kung Fu TV series.
When facing a fearful or frighten person or another animal whom we offer no threat -- our challenge is to remove or otherwise address the source of the fear.
Recognizing that it is rare that one truly wants to experience fear:
- First we must recognize the fear itself -- not always easy as sometimes it is hidden by bluster
- Second we must recognize the perceived threat that causes the fear -- real or perceived the resulting fear is real
- Then we must determine whether we can address the perception or reality of the threat
- Then we must do so
- If we are unable to do so, we must prepare ourselves to deal with the consequence of the fear.
When facing fear in ourselves:
- We have the same issues; but we can also draw upon our knowledge of our strengths and our ability to withstand certain kinds of misfortune
- Likewise, we can work to increase our ability to differentiate between real threats and ones we have created in our minds and dismiss the ones we have created in our minds (relaxation techniques help here)
- Finally, we can increase our ability to avoid real threats; and our strength to deal with those we cannot avoid.
Much of our fear comes from what we stand to loose; hence it is said; reduce desire -- reduce fear.
