Building Choice into Long Term Care
In the past, fate has dictated the passing of life in what are euphemistically called "nursing homes". But there is no longer a need for such a fate, if we are willing to work to change the rules.

Today is the second meeting of the Long Term Care Reform Task Force.  The TF was created by the Governor as part of a challenge to the existing framework (institutional) for LTC supports.  The TF has equal numbers of advocates, providers, and legislator/policy-makers.

The TF is to create a set of recommendations in 11 areas of LTC concern.  The first and formost is Choice.

If consumer and family choice is the ultimate value for determining policy, it will be hard for any other policy faction to control the evolution of the use of LTC supports.  But choice means that no part of the support system can opt out, or get a guaranteed return, or create an exception for some part of its interests.  Any policy that forces persons to accept any option against their will or interest will clearly violate choice as a principle, and will reflect the interest of some stakeholder other than the consumer or family.

You will find minutes of the task force meetings on the Community Consortium web site .

Check back with the web site periodically as well as this Blog for more up to date info on LTC reform.
