Good Luck Bad Luck, What's the difference? ( On Life)
I once heard this story from my father about 25 years ago, when I was still in high school. I had come home almost crying, and this is an old chinese tale: A farmer, who was considered a sage in the locality, had a prized horse which was the envy of the town. One day, the horse vaulted the gate and disappeard, and neighbors were lamenting him about his misfortune. He nonchalantly said, "well, good luck, bad luck, that's life!". A few days after, his horse came back, this time with several more horses together. The neighbors once again congratulated him on his good fortune, and he nonchalantly said, "good luck, bad luck, its all the same." Having now several horses, his children began to start horse riding, and one day, his favorite son fall off the horse and broke his leg. His neighbors once again condole with him on his misfortune, but he shrugged his shoulder, and said, "well, that's life." A few weeks after, northern tribes of China started invading, and there was an announcement for forced conscription among all able-bodied males. His son, now crippled, was exempted. His neighbors all come to him and said that he was one of the few who was able to keep his son beside him. As they always say, luck favors the hard working, and we should not try to lament our fate, but rather should look at life more openly. Nobody has a monopoly of good or bad luck, and sometimes, we have had the many misfortunes which would not have befall us if not for some good luck as well. How many rich people were congratulated on their good fortune, and how many of their children would have trodden the path of righteousness and better enlightenment if they had not had so much money? And how many have learned better life's experiences and lessons because of alleged misfortune? 5:40:51 PM![]() |
