BloggerCon-III Wrapup

Wait, wait wait wait, that music is all wrong

for this podcast we need a different theme, there that's better...

Hello and welcome to Program 9 (mp3)

This edition of Podcasting from SoftwareLand will be different that most in that I'm going to talk about podcasting, BloggerCon and mostly non-software related things so please bear with me.  SoftwareLand will return to software in the next edition.

Ok, so, BloggerCon 3 is over and I believe I've recovered from a wild weekend in the blogosphere.

First, I had the pleasure of helping Doug Kaye from IT Conversations setup (on Friday) and webast (all day Saturday) the main room of BloggerCon.

I'd be interested in any comments from those who might have listened to the webast.

As I think I mentioned in an earlier program, the reason I started podcasting is that I've got a small recording studio at my house, a library of already recorded music (I've been writing and recording my own songs for a long, long time) and, when I remember to use it, kind of a "radio voice".

So, it turns out I have a bunch of gear and software that was easy to load into a case and drag over to Stanford so that we could do the webcast.  It was a blast and I know Doug is planning to make all the audio from all the rooms available on IT Conversations over the next few weeks.  He said he's got quite a few conferences in the queue so he's not going to do them all next week.

Next, I met quite the range of old friends, podcasters who I knew by voice (and who I feel I know quite a bit about) and amazing new friends.

In the old friend department there's Steve Gillmor who worked with me on a project 15 years ago (and to whom I was on the phone during the 1989 earthquake!), Dave Winer who I had a brief working relationship about that same time and with whom I've now reestablished contact.  Dave and I both had experiences with Gordon Eubanks acquiring our companies (me with Digital Research and Dave with Symantec).

In the podcaster department, there's Dawn and Drew (who are amazingly energetic in person!), Adam Curry, who is quite a bit taller than I expected, and who wore, I thought quite appropriately, rose colored glasses, and Dave Shlusher the Evil Genius Chronicles personality who it turns out saw the same kind of outlet in podcasting as I did as he's

been an independent producer of radio shows in the past.  There were a few other podcasters I recognized (like Eric Rice) who I didn't get to talk to very much and I'm sure there were others I just didn't recognize.  The most amazing tidbit of information I learned about podcasting is that Matthew Bischoff is only 13 years old!  Way to go Matthew!

In the new friends department, there's Micki Krimmel who is (a) an amazingly friendly person (Hi Micki!), (b) cute (see the photo of Micki and me at the after-con dinner, she's the one with the amazing smile) (c) a paid blogger working for a film company that does socially active files that actually tries to get people to take action instead of just saying oh, that's to bad and (d) dying to do podcasting.

Then there's Ric Alber, who's a friend of a friend with whom I'd never said more than hello but I think he's got the bug and we're going to do some work together in the podcasting space.  Also, Doug Kaye, who's a great guy to work with and a gentleman (and probably a scholar), Kiran (who used to work with IBM research), Robert Scoble (who, like me works at Microsoft and, unlike me, has everybody and his dog reading his blog...he spends 3 hours every night creating his link blog...where does he get the time!!!!), Dave Johnson (who came up to me at the dinner on Friday night convinced we'd met before (it was probably in Monterey years ago but then again, who knows...we've met now!)

And then there's all the people I met whose names, blogs and podcasts I don't recall (I've got a bit of a blind spot that way, sorry folks).  If you remember me, ping me with an email at softwareland at softwareland.org and I'll give you a plug.

I'll close with a few other notes.  One, I wore my "I love podcasting" T-shirt.  I'd like to remind everyone that you can get one (and a mug, like the one I gave to Adam Curry [he liked it!]) at www.cafepress.com/podcasting.  Again, I don't make any money off this it's just for fun.  I'm hoping to get Adam and Dave to send me iPodder and BloggerCon

logos so I can make shirts and mugs available with those logos also.  There are 4.5 million blogs (who'da thunk there were that many!?!).

I also got inspired to help people figure out how to do podcasting.  I've setup a www.howtopodcast.org site (nothing there yet).  I'm planning step-by-step instructions and links to software downloads and hoping to get it up before Thanksgiving.

And finally, I'm so jazzed by the energy I got from all the people at BloggerCon I'm inspired to do some other podcasts besides SoftwareLand.  Once I get them setup I'll toot the horn for them.  The plan is to do a series of 1-2 minute podcasts and try to do it daily and then I also am going to do a music-related podcast featuring music I've written as well as music that my daughter, Lyndzie Taylor (who's much, much better than me ;) ) has done.

NOTE: The softwareland.org domain is new so it might bounce mail if you send it on Sunday night so send to softwareland at mikelehman dot com if need be - thanks!
