Nils Schneider, a 17-year-old computer science student from Germany got an iPod
for Christmas and wanted to hack it to run Linux. However he couldn't get Linux
to boot so he made an insightful leap that he could dump the existing boot
loader encoded (modulated) as audio using the on-board piezoelectric sound
"chirp", record it on a computer and then decode (demodulate) it via a pc-based
application. He said it took 20 hours to dump the loader.
As they say, everything old is new again, can you say telephone acoustic coupler
