Urgent Alert: Reject Bush's Budget

ACTFORCHANGE ACTIVISM UPDATE: February 16, 2005

You are receiving this newsletter because you have previously taken action on ActForChange in support of progressive values.

IN THIS BULLETIN:

Reject Bush’s Budget

On February 7, President Bush released his proposed 2006 federal budget. Despite record military spending and more tax cuts, the president says we cannot afford to help many of our most vulnerable neighbors. All this at a time when he has just proposed spending $80 billion more for the coming year’s occupation of Iraq and borrowing trillions more dollars to privatize Social Security!

Our government’s budget should represent our national priorities. But Mr. Bush’s priorities are in the wrong place and the consequence will be suffering for our most vulnerable neighbors. Please urge your members of Congress to reject this heartless expression of our collective goals, and vote instead to extend a helping hand to the least among us.

Tell the DISH Network that Pentagon Propaganda Channel is not in Public Interest

DISH Network has just announced it is adding to its broadcast lineup a 24/7 “public interest” channel produced by the U.S. Department of Defense that previously was aimed only at U.S. military personnel. Under U.S. law, the federal government is banned from producing propaganda aimed at influencing the American people. Despite this ban, the television channel which is one hundred percent controlled by the Pentagon will beam highly produced daily news programs promoting the interests of the Pentagon and paid for by U.S. taxpayers into millions of American homes.

Bring the Leaders of the Darfur Genocide to Justice

Ten years after the Rwanda genocide, it’s happening again in Darfur, Sudan. The U.S. government has been a leader on stopping the violence in Darfur so far, but right now the Bush administration is refusing to allow the permanent International Criminal Court (ICC) to take up the Darfur cases. This would require a Security Council veto, and the U.S. is threatening to use it to block the permanent court, which the Bush administration opposes on principle from acting to bring justice to Darfur.

Tell Secretary of State Rice that you want to see the Darfur genocide sent to the ICC for investigation and prosecution!
