[Alternative energy] Civic Center Refurbishment Includes Solar Energy

Construction will begin shortly on an energy savings and performance project for Cathedral City's civic center. [Dental waste] American Dental Association Awarded EPA Grant

Region V of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded the American Dental Association (ADA) a grant to provide information to dentists in the Great Lakes region on ADA's Best Management Practices for handling dental amalgam waste. Dental amalgam is a silver-colored material widely used to fill cavities and is made when elemental mercury is combined with other metals into a stable alloy. ADA's Best Management Practices promote the responsible handling of amalgam waste and recycling.

[Grants] Funds for Projects Engaging Kids in the Garden

The National Gardening Association (NGA) supports programs across the country that actively engage kids in the garden and improve the quality of life for all. A variety of grants and awards programs are available to schools and/or community organizations with garden projects involving at least 15 kids between the ages of 3 and 18. Programs with upcoming application deadlines include: Youth Garden Grants, which provide schools and community organizations with seeds, tools, garden products, and educational resources for child-centered outdoor garden programs; and "Room to Grow" Juliana Greenhouse Grants, supporting schools and community organizations for projects that engage youngsters in a greenhouse environment. Applications for Youth Garden Grants are due by December 1, 2004 while applications for the Room to Grow Greenhouse Grants must be submitted by December 31, 2004.

[Grants] Support for the Environment, Women, Civil Rights, and AIDS issues

The Streisand Foundation primarily provides support to U.S.-based nonprofit organizations that are working on a national level. The Foundation focuses on environmental issues, women's issues including health-related concerns, civil liberties and democratic values, civil rights and race relations, and AIDS issues. Support is also provided to Los Angeles-based nonprofit organizations for children's and youth-related issues with a focus on the economically disadvantaged. The Foundation is accepting letters of inquiry between September 1 and December 1, 2004.

[Grants] Grants for School Libraries

The goal of the Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries is to provide print books to the school libraries and students that most need them. Grants of up to $5,000 are made to update, extend and diversify the book collections of school libraries throughout the U.S. Preference is given to elementary, middle, or high schools in which 90% or more of the school population receives free or reduced lunch. The application deadline is December 1, 2004.
