Thousands of students across eight states and Canada are turning out to test the quality of their local watersheds this month as part of the Global Rivers Environmental Education Network (GREEN) program, Earth Force President Vince Meldrum announced today. The events, sponsored by the General Motors Corporation, are an example of outstanding public/private partnerships to engage America's youth in hands-on learning experiences, and provide opportunities for young people to understand, improve and sustain the watershed in their community. Across the country students will be testing the water in Michigan, Colorado, Indiana, Missouri, Tennessee, Ohio, New York and Virginia. For more information on Earth Force, contact Jackie Clark at (301) 987-7113 or go to http://www.earthforce.org or http://www.green.org.

Sustainability is alive and well and growing up in Ulster County. That's the message that came through loud and clear at the green building and renewable energy expo, "Let the Sun Shine," hosted by the Town of Rosendale on April 16. A how-to seminar designed to introduce green building practices, energy-efficient design, and renewable-energy resources to homeowners and building professionals, the expo was held at the Town of Rosendale Recreation Center which features several green building features, including a geothermal heating and cooling system. Often "green buildings" are developed and publicized, but then actual energy functioning is not reported, sometimes because performance is less than anticipated. Having inhabited its new green headquarters for the first year, The Woods Hole Research Center is addressing those issues by tracking, and making publicly available, information on the performance of its building. View the green building performance overview at http://www.whrc.org/building/education/performance.htm. [Source: Environmental Protection E-News]

A team of ecologists and physicists have come up with a new theory that might just explain, well, all of life's patterns. At the heart of it is metabolism: they claim that the way life uses energy is a unifying principle for ecology in the same way that genetics underpins evolutionary biology. Energy use, in the form of metabolic rate, can be understood from the first principles of physics, so they believe that metabolic rate can explain growth, development, population dynamics, molecular evolution, the flux of chemicals through the environment, patterns of species diversity and that's only the beginning. From US New & World Report via Eco-Portal, an article on the hybrid phonomenon, including questions about it's longevity. There's no doubt, though, that the Japanese, particularly Toyota, have taken a strong lead on these vehicles. The article suggests that part of that was a consideration of "emotional factors": that while recouping the "premium" cost of a hybrid means a long-term investment in a car, elements of social-consciousness and status have eclipsed merely economic reasons for purchasing hybrids. JD Powers predicts that hybrid sales will peak at 3%, but that's not stopping a number of American and international automakers from jumping on the trend. From Time Europe via ClimateArk, a look at the small but growing trend towards microgeneration of energy in Europe. As you might imagine, the big power companies hate it and call it inefficient, particularly for industrial or commercial uses. That reminds me of my time in Vegas where the developers of a new hotel project threatened to build their own power plant if the local electric company didn't give them preferential rates. I'm guessing the commercial sector could do wonderful things with this if given an incentive...

It was West Coast all the way at DOE's Hydrogen Fuel Cell Model Car Challenge, where teams from Portland, Oregon, and San Jose, California, took top honors. But the East Coast answered two days later, when a team from Alexandria, Virginia, won the National Science Bowl for the fourth time. [EERE Network News]

Portland, Oregon, is the second U.S. city to require city buildings to obtain LEED Gold certification. New green buildings have also been built in Maryland and Tennessee, and to help designers achieve their energy efficiency goals, DOE has updated its EnergyPlus energy simulation software.
