Year after year, debris from construction and demolition piles up in the world's landfills. Yet most construction waste can be reused or recycled. [Water] America's unheralded water cleanup

With little fanfare, counties, states, and the federal government have collectively spent an estimated $14 billion or more - at least $1 billion a year since 1990 - to restore rivers and streams to their natural condition, not including dollars spent on Goliath restoration projects like the Everglades. Ironically, the move to clean up America's unheralded rivers comes at a time when the condition of the nation's waterways overall is starting to deteriorate. [Source: Christian Science Monitor]

Eco-minded institutional investors pledged this week to channel $1 billion into clean-technology investments and take other steps to help combat risks posed by climate change. managers and state treasurers to Al Gore and former treasury secretary Paul O'Neill -- met to talk about how environmentally concerned shareholders could prod U.S. corporations into facing up to the challenges of global warming. Emily Gertz sends a dispatch from the scene. [Source: Grist Magazine]

[Books] Escape from Ecotopia

The 30th-anniversary edition of Ernest Callenbach's cult-classic novel Ecotopia has hit the shelves. Readers flocking to the book for the first time seeking an inspiring vision of a sustainable society may be surprised to find a loopy melange of free love, Marxism, paganism, ritual warfare, legalized drugs, and therapy speak. Though often characterized as a political work, the inhabitants of Ecotopia are so numbingly alike that politics are superfluous, writes reviewer Pat Joseph. But despite its dubious aesthetic merits, it can't be dismissed as a relic. [Source: Grist Magazine]

[Alternative energy] The Offshore Wind Power Debate: Views from Cape Cod

Wind Power--Cape Cod

The Offshore Wind Power Debate: Views from Cape Cod (PDF; 187 KB)
"This article draws on semistructured interviews with residents of Cape Cod to analyze values, beliefs, and logic of supporters and opponents. For example, one value found to lead to opposition is that the ocean is a special place that should be kept natural and free of human intrusion. One line of argument found to lead to support is: The war in Iraq is problematic, this war is 'really' over petroleum, Cape Cod generates electricity from oil, therefore, the wind project would improve U.S. security. Based on analysis of the values and reasoning behind our interview data, we identify four issues that are relevant but not currently part of the debate." [ResourceShelf's DocuTicker]
