Deputy Bureau Chief, Abuja
Still basking in the euphoria of his confirmation last Thursday, Inspector General of Police, Sunday Ehindero, has warned men of the Force against detaining anybody for longer than necessary henceforth.
Addressing inspectors and other ranks of the force during an interactive session in Abuja on Tuesday, Ehindero disclosed that a signal has been sent out to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Force CID against anybody being detained by the CID without the DIG or his (Ehindero’s) approval.
Towards this end, he announced, the Force high command was designing a special form to ensure that the new directive was complied with.
The IGP also ordered that police cells be kept clean, saying he would continuously visit the cells to monitor the offences for which suspects were detained.
He restated that bail was free, warning that those in the habit of collecting money for bail should desist from the act forthwith.
“You (police) must improve on your professional conduct. While doing your duties, be polite, show decorum and maintain the highest level of behaviour. Accused persons are not to be tortured, as they have their rights and such rights must be respected”, Ehindero said.
Speaking on the last Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and civil society groups rally against the latest hike in the prices of petroleum products, Ehindero commended NLC president, Adams Oshiomhole, for the mature manner he led the exercise.
He added that President Olusegun Obasanjo’s commendation would spur the Force to better performance.
On extortion of motorists by police, he expressed satisfaction that the situation was now better urging the police to encourage good relationship with one another.
