  • Lent: Call to Conversion: Frequently Asked Questions About Lent "Questions and answers about this Christian religious observance that precedes Easter. Answers questions such as, "Why do Catholics fast and give things up during Lent?" "Why are there ashes on Ash Wednesday and palms on Palm Sunday" "When does Lent end?" and "Why meatless Fridays?"   • Passover Through Archaeology and Rare Documents: A Teaching Site "This site uses artifacts and rare books to tell the story of the Jewish holiday of Passover. The items appear in chronological order and include the oldest extant Haggadah from the Cairo Genizah, a 1985 Haggadah in memory of the Holocaust, and related historical documents. Also includes a section of study questions. from the Jewish Theological Seminary, New York." (SR)

  • Free Classic Audiobooks Available in MP3 and M4B for iPod.
  • Bookshelf This isn't a book club per se, but it shows how many people are currently reading a specific book, who wants to read the book and who has finished it. People can comment on the book and rate it. (LS)
  • LibraryThing “LibraryThing is an online service to help people catalog their books easily. You can access your catalog from anywhere—even on your mobile phone. Because everyone catalogs together, LibraryThing also connects people with the same books, comes up with suggestions for what to read next, and so forth.” (IRN)

Business

  • Business Writer’s Free Library "Writing letters or memos in the world of business is an acquired skill, and those beginning to learn about this process will appreciate this site, which was designed by the Authenticity Counseling Company. The helpful resources offered here are divided into several sections, including “General Resources and Advice”, “Basic Writing Skills”, and “Basic Composition Skills”. One other section is worth noting as well, and this is the section titled “Some Types of Correspondence”." (SR)

Homework

  • Writing Resource Center: Empire State College [pdf] "he list contains documents from The Genesee Valley Center Writing Program and is divided into sections such as “Grammar & Punctuation”, “ESL Resources”, and “Documenting Resources”. The site contains over 150 specific resources that range from worksheets for faculty on how to conduct informal writing activities to a primer on when to write out numbers and when to use numerals in different types of documents."   • Physlets "Understanding how various concepts and processes in physics can be an exasperating experience for students beginning to study the field, so finding sites like this one can be quite a delight. These Java-based applets were developed at Davidson University by Wolfgang Christian, and they are a real delight. First-time visitors may wish to read through the introduction on using these physlets, and then move on to look through the different sections on the site. In total, there are over 100 physlets here, and they include those that illustrate (or animate) such processes as linear momentum, elastic linear collisions, and the movement of sound waves." (SR)

  • The Drachen Foundation "This organization is "devoted to the increase and diffusion of knowledge of kites worldwide." The "About Kites" section of the website features kite basics (types of kites and how and in what winds they fly), discussion of kite building materials, and kite history resources that describe "the Eastern and Western origins of kites, and highlight significant events during kiting's long history." Also includes reports from research projects, description of archive collections, and related material." (LII)
