The Known World
The Known World takes place in Virginia, before the Civil War. It tells the story of the Townsend plantation--owned by Henry Townsend, former slave of William Robbins. Henry also owns slaves. The story mostly takes place after Henry has died and his widow, Caldonia, has taken over the running of the plantation. Part of the novel tells the backstory of how people have gotten to where they are now, and sometimes it tells what happens years later. It is an interesting look at the issue of slavery, and particularly of african american slave owners. Very good book.
