Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009.

President Obama signed the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 yesterday to ensure equal pay for all, which guarantees that there will not be discrimination on the basis on gender, age or race. The remarks of the President are available on the White House website. There is also a short video clip on the site. The full text of the law is available for public review. Ideas, thoughts, and comments from the public are invited.

Paul Dunbar Project
February 3
Kick off Black History Month at the Library with a return performance by Creative Tradition, a Detroit based performance poetry ensemble that features tenor saxophonist Keith Gamble, the spoken word of poet, Wardell Montgomery Jr. and tribute pieces to the historical literary figure Paul Laurence Dunbar. Musical interludes composed by Keith Gamble are inserted between spoken word selections.

Introduction to computers will offer an introduction to what a computer is and how to use it. It is designed for beginners with little or no knowledge of computers. Topics covered will include an explanation of Windows and files, how to turn on a computer, and how to use the mouse. Class size is limited. Please call ahead to register (231-722-7276). Registration starts on January 2.
The class will be held at Hackley Public Library.

Valentine Hearts with Ink Art

2:00 - 4:00 pm
Kids can print Valentine Cards by the dozen at this fun Ink Art Program. They’ll draw designs in easy-to-work Styrofoam blocks, then print their artwork in colorful, washable inks on holiday cards.

Nationalizing the American Banking System?.

Here is an interesting news analysis from The New York Times on whether nationalization or partial-nationalization of the American banking system is a good idea. New FOIA Requesting Guide from the National Security Archive.

The National Security Archive has released a new guide, Effective FOIA Requesting for Everyone. Its aim is to provide “comprehensive overview of how to obtain documents from federal executive branch agencies.� It is divided into six chapters and all of them are available online in PDF format.

"The General Services Administration announced that it has delivered on a promise to use Web 2.0 technology to give citizens electronic access to government information. The USA.gov Web site now is offering a governmentwide news feed service and a gallery of gadget applications....

"Additions to the USA.gov Web site include the Government News Aggregator, which is designed to use RSS feeds to deliver news and information from across the federal government."
