Step-by-Step Guide to a Healthy Emergency Fund [Money] .

An emergency fund may seem like a luxury in the midst of a recession, but if you don't have one, now's the time to start it. Photo by Tracy O.

Personal finance weblog The Simple Dollar details how to build a big, healthy emergency fund a little at a time—so even if you're not in a great place with your income, you can still take the first steps necessary toward filling out your extra cash reserve. For example:

Set Your Initial Target Low
So, what's the first step? Many people bite off a gigantic goal for their emergency fund right off the bat and then find that it's very hard to get there. Eight months of living expenses is an enormous goal, one that will take years to reach - and along the way, you're bound to get disheartened.

Instead, one great way to start is to set a goal that's more reasonable. Make it your initial goal to have an emergency fund of just $250 or $500. That's a goal that you can reach in just a few months (or even less if you're in a good income situation) and yet it's an amount that can make a huge difference when you have an emergency.

The emergency fund isn't new territory on Lifehacker, but it's good to get such a detailed refresher right about now. Not sure how much you need in your emergency fund? Check out Bankrate's emergency fund calculator.
