A Code of Conduct for RFID Privacy

I thought it worth posting a link to the Privacy Code of Conduct that we developed for organisations that are adopting Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technologies in a commercial, healthcare or public sector environment.

The Code of Conduct is based upon EPG's work for Aegate, a PA Group company, that is rolling out mass serialisation technologies - including RFID - to protect the safety of patients when dispensing prescription pharmaceuticals.

Similar schemes have, in the past, proven to be a lightning rod for civil liberties groups. Companies that have ignored the privacy impact of RFID have faced huge criticism resulting in product boycotts, adverse media publicity and even lawsuits.

To help control such issues for Aegate, EPG created a set of practical standards to ensure that each stakeholder understands their responsibilities for protecting patient privacy, and acts accordingly. Aegate's programme is a milestone in the responsible use of RFID technologies to protect patient safety without compromising patient privacy.

Since developing Aegate's privacy policy, EPG has further developed the document to make it applicable to RFID users in a broad spectrum of organisations. Whilst it is not intended as a cure-all for RFID-related privacy issues, the Code should provide a firm foundation for any organisation that is concerned about the possible privacy impact of its RFID implementation.

I'm now working on a revised Code of Conduct that will take into account an even broader range of stakeholders and the impact of the latest technology developments in this area.

The RFID Privacy Code of Conduct is available here.
