UK National Identity Cards: Third Commons Reading
The UK National Identity Cards scheme is back in the news today as the Bill goes for its final reading in the House of Commons. The Home Office has published further statistics, backed by statements from the Home Secretary.
While the outcome of today's vote seems to be a foregone conclusion, this topic is going to remain a thorn in the government's side for some years yet. I'm at a loss to understand why the Home Office hasn't considered a (partially) federated approach for the scheme, and why they continue to want at least 13 biometrics, a number that is certainly going to be unlucky for someone. That said, at least we're seeing some softening of the government's approach, so maybe the Bill's progress through the Lords will lead to further changes?
