A double wammy privacy solution
3M have very kindly loaned me a privacy filter for my laptop display. I first came across these about 12 years ago, and the idea is very simple indeed: a polarised sheet that sits over the display and prevents it from being read from any angle except for directly in front of the display. I'm typing this on the train, and can be pretty confident that the passenger in the seat next to me can't read the text. There's very little loss of brightness indeed - certainly much improved over the early models - and the filter can easily be slipped out of its mountings if required (once again, the mountings are much improved over early models and are very discrete).
For me this is incredibly useful. I regularly spend 2 hours+ on the train each day, and if I need to work on client materials then I'm in trouble if anyone sits next to me. With this in place I can carry on working without a problem, and recover that lost time.
But I've spotted a second use for this: despite their design flaws, I'm a die-hard Mac fan, and this is my third laptop from the MacBookPro/PowerBook series. But Apple laptops are designed to be so slim that the keyboard is in contact with the display when closed, and this marks the screen. Most MacBookPro users I know carry a thin piece of cloth or neoprene (typically £10 or so) to protect the screen from the keyboard - but with the privacy filter in place I don't need this any more.
I think I might have to keep this new toy :)
