I'm not going to make this weblog just one big advertisement for all of my poker stuff, but if you're interested, here's a thumbnail sketch of the resources that I'm making available to poker players everywhere:

  • Poker Sidekick - several years ago, when I took a more serious interest in Texas Holdem poker, I decided to develop a software program that would assist with online play.  When I originally wrote it, it was really just for me.  It was not available to anyone else and was my own private online poker assistant.  What Poker Sidekick basically does is to recognize when a player is engaged in an online poker game on their PC, then it begins to monitor the game.  It reads the poker room game screen through a technique known as "screen-scraping", where it periodically grabs a copy of the poker game program's window (what you see on the screen), then it interprets what it "sees".

    • Poker Sidekick then interprets what it sees, in terms of where the Player is sitting, their pocket cards whenever they're dealt, and the cards that get dealt to everyone (community cards)
    • During the "pocket" phase of a hand, it calculates various things about the Player's starting hand, namely the strength of that hand, the odds of that hand being a winner in a 10-person ring game, the "Sklansky" groups (actually, I've improved his original starting hand tables based upon computer simulations so that Poker Sidekick's starting hands are better)
    • During the remaining phases of a hand (flop, turn, river, pay, showdown), Poker Sidekick calculates and displays the Player's current hand, and their hand's "strength", on a scale of 1 to 10.  This hand strength is determined by calculating all possible hands that the Player could potentially draw, the odds of drawing those hands, along with also calculating all possible hands that all opponents could possibly draw, and the odds of them making those hands.  Next, it goes through an elaborate set of "scoring" to emerge with a single value that represents the statistical strength of the Player's hand.
    • The Player's hand and its strength are then measured against a number of "rules" to further adjust the overall hand score, and to provide a "Play Indicator" - whether the Player should Fold, Check, Call, Bet, Raise, or go All-in.
    • Somewhere along the way, I decided to make Poker Sidekick available to the public, so others could use it to learn and play better.
    • Now, Poker Sidekick is one of the leading products of its type, helping people play better online poker everywhere.  (more info)

  • Secrets of Winning Sit and Go Tournaments - I got into playing online Sit and Go (SNG) tournaments, and realized the need for a more systematic approach to playing these mini-tourneys in order to win more reliably.  The available e-books on the subject left a lot to be desired, so I decided to document everything I'd learned about playing winning Texas Holdem poker and these SNG tournaments.  Now, all of these "secrets" are available to anyone who wants to get a quick jump-start, become a very strong poker player quickly, and make money (play money or real money) at Texas Holdem.

  • Texas Holdem Poker Websites - somewhere along the way, I decided that making free information available to poker players would help me better establish my "poker presence" on the Internet, help sell more of my products and enable people to benefit from what I've learned.  Here's a quick list of my poker-related websites, which are full of free Texas Holdem poker strategies, articles, news, and related information:

Hi,

Welcome to my radio weblog.  This is an awesome way to manage information on the Internet!  My logs and site will focus on a number of areas that I am personally interested in or involved with, including Texas Holdem poker, artificial intelligence and machine learning, natural language processing, and more leisurely topics, like bass fishing...

On Poker:

The Texas Holdem poker phenomenon has taken the world by storm. There are reportedly over 100 million active poker players worldwide. Poker’s popularity is largely the by-product of technology and several recent trends:

  1) online gaming, where players engage and socialize in real-time over the Internet, and

  2) the broad publicity created by high profile TV shows like the World Series of Poker (WSOP) and World Poker Tour (WPT).

I started out playing poker when I was quite young, but didn't get seriously interested until a few years ago, when the Texas Hold'em wave first started rolling in.  Since then, WOW!  It's quite amazing just how much is going on in this area today.

Online poker has become a multi-billion dollar industry, and one of the favorite pasttimes for millions of people worldwide.  I know - I get to interact with thousands of people around the world by email due to my poker writings, websites and poker-related products.  People are having a lot of fun, so that makes it all worthwhile.
