Won two more Sit and Go tournaments. You know, winning tournaments takes a lot of things - the ability to read opponents, the ability to fold what seem like good hands (e.g., QQ, KK) at times when the opponent indicates they have a monster, and many other skills that take a lot of time and experience to accrue. Of all the skills required, the most difficult one is the most basic of all - patience...
In order to win tournaments, it takes a great deal of patience:
- The patience to wait for a decent starting hand (and avoid playing dumb starting hands just to get some action)
- The patience to avoid engaging other players when it's "risky" (it's often better to just fold and protect your stack)
- The patience to hang on and not just "go for it" - these momentary lapses of reason are one of the biggest causes of losses
- The patience to study the opponents and understand their patterns of play (see article on www.BetterHoldem.com for more details)
- The patience to slow-play a good hand when the time is right
- The patience to basically "sit out" and let the other players knock each other out when ahead (again, protecting that big stack)
I continue to be amazed how difficult it is for everyone (including me) to exhibit the proper patience. Those who do, along with a little luck and perseverence, come out on top an unfair amount of the time.
