2nd Annual Westchester Lagoon Ice Classic News Flash

As of 9:00 PM this evening, 3/4 of the Lagoon ice has gone out.

Another old codger, Peter has never seen the ice go out before May 1st.

BUT only 2/3's of the ice is gone. So, according the judges (me), it is not yet officially out.

However, it is my guess that it will be out by 3:00 PM tomorrow. It's a very good thing that Ice Classic voting closes in an hour and thirty five minutes.

A pair of Barrow's Goldeneyes floating on the now vast expanse of open water.

Why are these Barrow's Goldeneyes and not Common Goldeneyes? Two significant distinguishing features on the male:

1) The white patch in front and below the eye is a long oblong. In the Common Goldenye, it is a roundish splotch.

2) The back of the Barrow's Goldeneye has much more black showing with just some white patches in a line. The Common Goldeneye back has quite a bit more white "ladder like" markings.
