Fighter planes flying over NY tonight. Looked cool, but it felt a little weird to see them.

Man's quest for broadband on the road, chapter whatever.

Park South Hotel, NY, a dark little place hard by the ZD building on 28th Street where Ziff stashes people like me when we come into town. Broadband is free, but the DSL jack is behind the TV stand, and they don't provide a cable, so I'm sitting on the floor as I type, tethered to the wall by the short cord I keep in my computer bag. Outgoing email chokes on a some server problem, so I'm answering email via Earthlink's web service.

But the connection is fast and stable, so I'll give the whole set-up passing grade.

Local officials pooh-poohed this report that New York cops were treated disrespectfully by Greensboro airport security as they passed through town, according to an unposted story in this morning's N&R.

Having just gone through security at GSO, I would not be surprised to learn that the cops had a case.

Security across the country seems to have really tightened in the last few weeks. Maybe the Feds have info, or maybe it's pre-election caution, or just new procedures going into effect. Whatever. The GSO crew is grim and unfriendly. I know it's serious work, and I appreciate the payoff, but attitude helps. I got everything short of a cavity search at SFO last month, and the vibe was friendly. Today they made me feel like a criminal in my hometown.

So if an NY cop forgot his credentials and had to be run through the routine, fine, that's nothing to complain about. But if he got the vibe I got today, I can see why he didn't like it.

Wall Street Journal (unposted): "As blogging goes mainstream, companies that make software for bloggers -- many of which are still-unprofitable start-ups -- need to find ways to make money."

The article focuses on Six Apart and founders Ben and Mena Trott, who have offended some starry-eyed bloggers by trying to run their business as a business.

Imagine the uproar if CBS told its affiliates to run Fahrenheit 9/11 a few days before the election.

Well, another big media corporation, Sinclair, is requiring its stations to run an anti-Kerry propaganda film just days before the election. Sinclair has two stations in this market, WXLV and WUPN. Both stations must file for relicensing with the FCC this year. Both depend on local advertisers for revenue, too.

This site tells you how to tell the FCC what you think of Sinclair use of the public airwaves. (via Atrios)

Sinclair has stations in Raleigh and Asheville, too.
