Hudson River Valley--7/22, 23, 24
After the stock exchange, I took a train from Grand Central Station up the Hudson River valley to Tarrytown. I was on the milk-run train that stopped at lots of stations. Even though it took longer, it was fun. Yes, there is a Yonkers.
What gorgeous country---trees, the river, steep hills rising from the banks, real country side! Looking back down the river, I could still see the Manhattan skyscrapers. It must be marvelous in the fall with the changing colors. Yes, I would like a second house on the banks of the Hudson.
Saturday, S. and I took a boat trip up the Hudson nearly to West Point. It was a lovely afternoon for a river cruse--sunny but not too hot, not too many people, great scenery, and some history to go with it.
During the weekend we spent some time driving around the area---Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow, Pontantico Hills, etc. I wanted to see the Rockefeller sculpture gardens at Kykuit but decided I didn't want to do it in the heat and among the hordes of tourist groups that we had to join. I want to go on a cooler, quieter day so I can sit and enjoy it in peace.
Sunday morning S and I went to church at the Union Church of Pocantico Hills. It is a small church/chapel with incredible stained glass windows by Chagall and Matisse. The Matisse window is the last piece of art he completed before he died in 1954. The service, the message, and the surroundings made this the highlight of the weekend.
Sunday afternoon S took me to Newark for my flight to Seattle. I was in Renton at the Connole-Brown spa for four days of rest and relaxation. L.and I talked Slingerland between Mariner games. We went to the ball park for Tuesday''s game. Even though the Mariners lost, we had a good time.
