Yahoo's LAUNCHcast free personalized "music experience" (which it bought in June 2001) is an interesting service if you want to hear some random music with a pretty good selection of artists/genres.

From the LAUNCHcast help pages for Why can't I pause?: "You can! You just have to wait until 30 seconds into the song. At that time, the pause feature will become active. We made this change due to legal issues."
