Apple sample code: Moriarity “shows how to implement a Cocoa GUI that wraps command-line functionality, calling out to a UNIX task and presenting the results in the GUI to the user... The command-line functionality demonstrated in this case is ‘locate’—a command that builds a database of files on the system for searching, a la Sherlock.” (Editors note: Sherlock Holmes’ evil nemesis was named Moriarty. Why Apple spelled it with an extra i before the t is a matter of intense speculation.)

Apple TechNote 2032: Getting Started with GDB. “Project Builder provides a feature-rich GUI development environment in its own right, but doesn’t try to do all the work itself—it leverages open-source tools that are familiar to many in the development community. One of these tools is GDB, and is used by Project Builder to provide debugging information to the IDE.”
