Gartner research sees massive disruption to IT workers over next few years. Forecasts not only offshoring, but that new automated code generation tools could obsolete the need for most software developers of business applications. Says 75% of new business applications will be created by one to three people using new application development tools.
U.S. Programmers now working for India-level salaries. One company, offered the chance to offshore his development, chose instead to advertise the same jobs in the U.S. for about the same pay scales he was quoted for offshoring. The result? A flood of resumes.
Meanwhile, those brilliant people with Ph.D.s at the National Science Foundation are at again, telling us that fewer and fewer Americans are pursuing doctorates. Hmmmm.... do you suppose poor economic rewards and a flakey employment market might have even the tiniest impact on all this? Hello? Read the last paragraph of this page and see just how little more money you'll make with a Ph.D. Other research shows it takes up to 50 years to recoup the financial investment and lost wages of pursuing a doctoral degree. American students are hardly dumb. They seem to understand economics better than the NSF and government policymakers and choose fields with a greater return on investment. Is there a mystery here?
