When I look at this CDC chart it kind of suggests that the flu hysteria sweeping the media may be more hype than reality. The mortality rate due to flu and pneumonia is less than the normal seasonal baseline. Interesting? It seems that the hysteria - so far - is based on the observation that more people are choosing to visit the doctor with flu-like symptoms, which is widely reported, encouraging more visits, which is not a good proxy for actual flu.
Dec 11th-This just in: "There is no evidence that this particular flu season or this particular Fujian strain of influenza that we are dealing with is any more dangerous than similar strains that we have dealt with in the past," Gerberding [head of the CDC] added. "This is flu and this is the kind of situation that we have seen over and over again."
Dec 12th update: Flu appears to be (registration required) declining now in Canada and the U.K. Latest CDC data shows doctor visits leveling off in the U.S. while mortality still remains below seasonal norms.
I'm also adding back the sentence I deleted a day ago: A great many people have a self interest in promoting flu hysteria right now ranging from the media, to some health care providers (more business) to public health agencies to vaccine manufacturers. Funding issues required our local public health agency to lay off workers this year (which was unfortunate - it is a good and effective agency). The flu hysteria will work wonders when they request more funding next year. And you can be certain that the vaccine manufacturers will be asked to up their production from 83 million does this year to probably over 100 million doses next year. A lot of organizations benefit from maintaining the hysteria. ONLY the L.A. Times has noted that the flu situation appears to be leveling off and is below norms. (Our own local newspaper ran an article on Dec 13th noting that the flu season is below normal so far, but anxiety is off scale due to media hype. Such as several headline stories they ran early this week.) The media is grotesquely irresponsible with their creation of a panicked public. [Edward Mitchell: Common Sense Technology]
