The Buffalo News Bioinformatics: Fears amid cheers. "Everyone in the room, from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to Buffalo Mayor Anthony Masiello, was beaming at last week's announcement. The news was that Asia's largest computer consultant has become a deep-pocket partner of the University at Buffalo. Under an agreement signed Monday, Tata Consultancy Services of India will partner with local researchers and help transform their discoveries into money-making products." "But some in the tech community voiced concern that the state's $100 million-pl... Bush blesses outsourcing! while simultaneously predicting the creation of 3.8 million jobs this year! Would be nice if he would say in which country those new jobs will be created, wouldn't it? At least we now know, President Bush favors firing most U.S. technology workers, as his report makes very clear, we absolutely should offshore all jobs that can be done more cheaply somewhere else.
Meanwhile "...Morgan Stanley chief economist Stephen Roach warned in a note Monday that U.S. workers may already be behind in educating themselves. He cited statistics showing the number of Asians getting science and engineering degrees has jumped more than 50 percent in the past two decades while the number of Americans getting similar degrees has been stagnant" ... again, one of our brilliant economists discovers that India, China and other Asian countries have huge populations! Sorry Stephen, but if we base this on numbers, we cannot win. China has ten times more young people aged 20 to 29, and India has five times more than the U.S. No matter how hard we try, we cannot catch up to China and India. They outnumber us! Any maybe, just maybe, a lot of our students noticed in the past few years that job losses in tech companies have been terrific - and have moved on to more stable fields of employment. Fancy that - students making economic choices!
Of course these are the same pundits telling us that Americans must merely move on to "higher value jobs", while our "low level" engineering jobs go to India. Funny that. The India press says they see no reason why "higher value jobs" (whatever that might be) cannot also be done in India..
Economic theory, as I explained below, says that the world will be better off if we outsource all of our jobs. And that is true. But the U.S. will suffer for it as our pay scales fall to meet the global competition. Who is going to pay off our $7 trillion dollar federal debt then? [Edward Mitchell: Common Sense Technology]

Gosh, some tech companies may have to start hiring Americans for the next few months. Pity that. Watch for Harris Miller of the Indian Technology Association of America, I mean, Information Technology Association of America, to release an estimate on 3 million new IT jobs to be created in 2004, just 60% of President Bush's forecast 5 million new jobs in 2004! Congress will have to up the H-1B visa quote to maybe 1 million or so, so that U.S. tech firms can remain competitive! [Edward Mitchell: Common Sense Technology]
