Tech companies believe in free enterprise and free markets Except when they they all need lots of government subsidies and programs to "grow their markets". Say what? If tech is so great, why does it need to be subsidized?
And
Corporations support "free trade" while simultaneously lobbying for protectionist measures for themselves. Business Week says they cannot have it both ways. [Edward Mitchell: Common Sense Technology]

Let's Drug Everyone!!!!. A tiny study, funded by drug company Pfizer has managed to take the media by storm - and the conclusion is that "36 million Americans should be placed on statin drugs to lower their blood cholesterol levels RIGHT NOW! It's a "wonder drug, say some headlines.
Never mind that all this wonderful publicity to spend other people's money on drugs comes from a "study" of 6 people .... Your junk science alert system should be jumping to DEFCON 5/Homeland Security Level Red!
Drugs tend to have dangerous and annoying side effects. There is now controversy over whether lowering cholesterol achieves the desired results. If you do have heart disease, the very popular (and expensive) procedure to insert a "stent" now appears to have no benefit.
After a while, ordinary consumers (and certainly the insurance companies that pay for these expensive treatments) must start to feel like they are getting jerked around by the health care industry and what many are now calling greedy medical practices that may serve little useful purpose. What's an ordinary consumer supposed to believe anymore? [Edward Mitchell: Common Sense Technology]

Bummer! CDC Says Flu Season was perfectly normal. But wasn't the mass media hype fun last December? The "shortage" of vaccine, which some studies say did not work anyway, was a shortage created by grossly irresponsible media hysteria. I called it a normal flu season early on, citing the CDC's actual data. [Edward Mitchell: Common Sense Technology]

More Twists and Turns on the Road to Longhorn. Looks like a 'Shorthorn' release is officially off the table. But a new 'Windows XP Premium' bundle is in the works, as is a scaled-back version of the WinFS file system. [Microsoft Watch from Mary Jo Foley] [Edward Mitchell: Common Sense Technology]
