April Brings Frag Showers to Norway. The Viking Ship Olympic Arena, Norway. This is where The Gathering was held during Easter weekend. This is the venue the organizers tout as the world's largest "computer party." THG made the trip to Scandinavia to frag with the masses. [Tom's Hardware Guide: Article]

As Dave and the Generals on NPR note:  the US military is fully deployed in Iraq (which is amazing given that we spend over $700 m a year -- all-in costs -- on the military today).  The only way to increase forces in Iraq now is to eliminate troop rotations.  If you are looking for a reason for why PMC (private military corporations) are being used so extensively in Iraq today (upwards of 20,000 security consultants are in Iraq), this is it.  The number of PMC employees may outnumber uniformed US troops in Iraq within the next two years.

BTW:  In that interview on NPR, General Odem hits the nail on the head:

Odom says the U.S.-led war to oust Saddam Hussein has had the unintended consequence of making Iraq safe for terrorists and other anti-U.S. movements "and they're breeding them rapidly."

Reuters:  Global energy usage to jump 54% by 2025. Expected oil need to jump from ~81 m barrels a day to 121 m barrels.  My question:  where are we going to get that oil given the sharp drop in production from the aging super giant fields?

One answer:  OPEC is expected to be the major supplier of the extra oil, with the cartel's production at 56 million bpd in 2025 compared to 27 million bpd this year.

Does anyone else see a big problem with this?  I don't see any signs that OPEC can expand production to meet this demand.  Further, political instability is growing in the OPEC countries. [John Robb's Weblog]

Alaska Natives say "global warming" causing significant disruption in the Arctic. NASA says winters have been "slightly warmer than average" during the past decade. Bummer. Let's not let facts get in the way of some good anecdotal stories. (Alaska average temps are widely reported to have increased 5 deg F during the 20th century if you start measuring in 1900, which was much colder than the rest of the century. One of the fun things with "warming" or "cooling" theories is that you can show what ever want, by picking an appropriate starting point in time. Move the start to 1905 (as say, the last 99 years), and you find that temperatures were pretty much the same for 75 years, got warmer for about 20 years, and then recently got colder again. A more accurate statement of temperature changes in Alaska would say there is about a +1 to +2 degree rise, not 5 degrees. I have posted a graph of 20th century Alaska temperatures here.)
