Adam hits the nail on the head re: RSS vs. Atom.  This is all about big companies and VCs gaining control of a standard that is both widely adopted and works extremely well for 99% of users.  Their quest for money and power is Adam's pain. [John Robb's Weblog]

Nice presentation on the basics of fourth generation warfare (large PPT).  Very important aspect:
  • Strategic objective:  win the moral war.
  • Operational objective:  win the mental and moral war.
  • Tactical objective:  win the physical, mental, and moral war.

In this model, the treatment of Iraqi prisoners and the siege of Fallujah (particularly the statements prior to the operation) does harm strategic objectives. You might say this is obvious, but it isn't for so many people. [John Robb's Weblog]

Three new journal posts to Global Guerrillas:

Global Guerrilla software -- preview of I2P, an innovative bit of software from the global guerrilla underground.

How to hack the power system -- all it lacks is a sign that says "hack me.

Al Qaeda financing -- Osama's major innovation is that he created a financing system that allowed his terrorist network to severe its ties with nation-states (see Global Guerrilla Financing for the next major innovation in this area). [John Robb's Weblog]

NASA says aircraft jet contrails explain observed temperature rise in the U.S. from 1975 to 1994. Contrails - water vapor - create an enhanced green house effect and, according to NASA researchers, entirely explain the land-based temperature record from 1975 to 1994. Uh, does that mean the CO2-based warming climate models are wrong? Since if contrails explain it all, what is the CO2 modeling explaining? There isn't any temperature delta left over for CO2 to explain....Ooops :-)

EXCEPT back in September 2001, a bunch of researchers claimed that the grounding of jets led to a definite rise in temperatures! It's all described right here! You can even download the full report (MS Word file).

So there you have it - the presence of jet contrails raises temperatures and the absence of jet contrails raises temperatures! (Thanks to Scott, N7FSP for reminding me that I had published this latter story on the web site long ago - and it belongs here again!)

This report even links jet contrails to more mosquitos and an increase in West Nile Virus. Uh huh. [Edward Mitchell: Common Sense Technology]

Silicon Valley Dons a Brave Face, Despite Worries. Asian Age May 1 2004 3:16AM GMT [Moreover - Silicon Valley news] This is certainly a different perspective than what the lobbyists want you to hear: "Officially, Silicon Valley leaders are upbeat about globalization. Behind the scenes, however, many of them fret that the cradle of the information technology revolution will soon have to scramble to keep up with global competition." And: "But Semiconductor Industry Association President George Scalise said in November that the current wave of outsourcing is not - or not yet - producing as many jobs in the United States as did earlier waves of technological change and innovation."

The hinted at solutions to the new problems are that high tech needs improved "public infrastructure" ... code words that high tech is seeking taxpayer funded subsidies because its not delivering the promises of its own hype. [Edward Mitchell: Common Sense Technology]

Changes in the names of medicines, healthcare professionals to be vigilant against medication errors. Medical Science News May 1 2004 2:37AM GMT [Moreover - Healthcare management news] Health care consumers should be outraged that the health care professionals produce situations, like that described here, that are guaranteed to cause errors. This is a well known defect in health care systems. The fix is not to warn providers but to rename the medications so that they are not so easily confused. That this goes on in 2004 is an outrage and leads to mistakes and additional health care costs to treat the results of the mistakes. [Edward Mitchell: Common Sense Technology]

Common sense. Today brings a great item (below) lacking in common sense. The next item, on medications and the health care sector illustrates how, as an old friend of mine noted, "Everyone has lots of common sense because it is clear that few people are using up any of their common sense."...

I also updated the report saying an increase in jet contrails causes temperature increases with a past study confirming that a lack of jet contrails increases temperatures.... [Edward Mitchell: Common Sense Technology]
