Microsoft staff bemoan cutbacks. Microsoft's plan to save $80m by cutting back benefits upsets many of its staff, an internal poll obtained by Reuters reveals. [

Many employees asked, why would the company cut back on employee benefits when it has between $50 and $60 Billion in assets available. The answer is that costs have nothing to do with it: the market price of a software engineer, even at Microsoft has dropped. Microsoft no longer has to offer the best benefits program to attract the best employees due to the current surplus of software engineering talent now available. Its all about the market price of employees, and this is just an early shot in the collapsing compensation for tech workers. Meanwhile, politicians wonder why not enough students are enrolling in technology subjects? Duh! At my college and many others enrollment in computer and information systems courses is down by 50%. Students are abandoning tech fields where compensation is falling. This is a surprise? Politicians think we need to have more students in science and engineering, while simultaneously enacting policies to import temporary tech workers and export jobs. [
