This is something that ham radio operators would have been expected to do and write up in QST: A group of Wi-Fi (802.11 wireless LAN) enthusiasts take to the air over Los Angeles - in two aircraft - and scout out open wireless access points. They also conduct an in-flight, plane to plane digital video conference link up using 802.11 technology. (I did cross reference the names and it appears that one or two of the crew members are hams.)
