The Road Trip Gene....

The ActiveWords odyssey has taken me all kinds of places that I had not planned to go. More importantly it has allowed me to meet all kinds of wonderful people that I would never have met. As I write this, I am packing my bags for a road trip to meet up with Doc Searls.

When I first encountered Doc was after a day long session at PopTech. Doc and a group of guys were getting ready to go out for some adult beverages and talk about great stuff, I was headed to dinner with my wife, who didn't care much about PopTech, but expected that when I was trying to be a geek, I would at least be focusing on her. ( an otherwise normal expectation).

I then realized that Doc was one of the guys who had written "The ClueTrain Manifesto", which is very high on my must read list.

Since our first meeting, Doc has been a great supporter of our ideas, and when we first met up in Miami last fall it was like we were old friends. Somewhere in the course of the e-mail and/or conversational traffic I realized that Doc had arrived in Durham, NC, about 4 months after I graduated from Duke, and while in DNC, had become a serious Duke basketball fan.

The good news is that I can get tickets, the better news is that we will be there Sunday for the Duke/St. John's game.

For those with keen eye sight, we will be the older guys with faces painted blue and white, and perhaps either blue "D''s or "U"s painted on our chests as we join the other 8,800 Cameron Crazies at the very best place in the world to watch college basketball.

I am convinced that when my genes are mapped, they will find a common one, previously recognized but not mapped among most men of my age, i.e. "The Road Trip" gene.
