Apple Immigrants and Dave Paolo writes about Apple immigrants. "These people were true Mac nerds, but for some reason switching to Windows they didn't become Windows nerds but simply Windows users." Attsa me, Dave Winer. I use Windows, exactly as I used to use a Mac. I resigned as a Mac user, not over Amelio, as Paolo says, but over the religion...Oh well. It's too much trouble to learn a new OS now. Why bother. [Scripting News]

Y'know, I hear where Dave is coming from, on this, but I do have to ask: Why Bother? Dave, go back and read some of the stuff you've written about Microsoft in the past bit. That's why. I'll post links if your memory wants refreshing.... :)

Quite aside from that, I do have to note that agree with Dave heavily in one particular spot: The Religion

One of the greater concerns I see coming is the Cult of Superiority I see starting to form on Mac Users again, like the scum on the top of a lake. let me try and make a few points:

1. The "OS Wars" did nothing but distract everyone. This stuff should stay at the level of football rivalry, at most. Co-operate, everyone can have cool stuff and Apple and Microsoft and Linux will beat each others brains out improving and we'll(customers) get better stuff. This is NOT a zero-sum game

2. Windows does not suck(completely) I know too many intelligent people who use windows and like elements of it to be able to believe that it sucks that badly. What's more; who the fuck cares? If it does the job and they are happy leave them the hell alone!

3. Mac OS does not suck(completely) (See 2 above) Addendum: Try it, see what you think then decide you'll not use it. I've used Windows 3.1, 95, 98, NT(3.5, 4.0), 2000 and XP. There are cool elements in all of them...Well, ok, all of them except for Windows 3.1, the fact that anyone got work done using that was a Testament to the Human Spirit. The second anyone comes out with something that beats the Mac OS, The Mac OS goes bye-bye from my machine. The last company that did that was Apple, with Mac OS X, the invitation is still open.

4. Remember that big companies are the same creatures (usually) Hey, anyone remember when it was "Big Bad Apple" suing "Poor Little Microsoft"? I do. If Apple were in the same position as Microsoft were, they would likely be doing the exact same things. Hell, look at the stupid iTools/.Mac announcements last week.

5. No one likes to feel stupid, or persecuted I once worked on a client machine, (years ago) and I walked out and realized that I'd spent the entire time I was there fixing the machine, slamming Windows OS. Right after I left, I realized what an asinine thing that was to do. Not from a business standpoint (the fewer windows machines I have to work on the happier I am, sorry, MHO), but just from a Cool standpoint, it was an incredibly uncool thing to do. It was his machine, he chose it and he never evinced that he displiked Windows in any way. see #6

6. Hypocrisy Sux If you're going to rally for people to be allowed to use whatever machines they want, then that means that windows is one of the choices, and some people will take it.
