MacCritic has a rather interesting article about "Browser Wars". One of things in the article, I figure I should comment on. He says:
Never was it dead Camino's development continues to defy what many Mac users thought of as a dead browser per Safari's release.
Not that I'n going to argue that it's dead, indeed, as regular readers of this page (Hi Mike!), will be aware, I've gone back to Camino after using...um...newer versions of Safari.
The fact is, the thing that may/may not kill Camino is not the release of Safari.
The question that the release of Safari raises is: What browser is Apple going to ship with new Macs and install with new installs of Mac OS X? Explorer? Yeah right.
Followup question: What other browsers is Apple going to ship it with? Are you going to continue to bundle IE? You'll note that Netscape doesn't currently ship with Mac OS X or on new machines.
This is after Apple made an agreement to ship Internet Explorer as the default browser on the Mac. (Not the only one).
This will be the fulcrum point. Personally, I think Apple would include Netscape, IE, and Safari, with Safari as the default. I can't see including Camino, even if it does make a 1.0 version before Safari is ready, simply because it's features are too similar to Safari.
Mind you, if Apple wants to prove that they're into choice, then they would also include Camino 1.0, since they thought enough of it to use it in their comparison of browsers at Macworld. And I personally, recommend Camino over Safari easily.
Camino dead? No. But it may simply be not yet. And that would be a great shame.
