ObQuake/Tsunami

Figured I would post something about this.

Remember when Man does things, it's Evil (3,000+ dead in 9/11)

When nature does it, it's Tragedy (50,000+ dead in Tsunami)

The only video I saw of it...looks so innocent, just a little flooding, no biggy. UNtil you see that it's 1 half-mile into the city like that. So if global warming is to be believed, that New York somewhere down the road....

Other than not being able to avoid it on WBUR, I've been trying to avoid it, the stories of people losing their children after they were slammed into trees and the child was swept from their arms, the overall devastation that only now is getting started....

Somehow I doubt we'll be seeing programs on "How should you explain the tsunami to your children" on local news tho. After all, it happened to people we don't know, mostly weren't Americans, can't happen here, anyway....

Y'know, like terrorism couldn't happen here....

Anyways, best wishes out to those directly affected. I hate to sound so cynical, the outpouring of support around the world is heartening to see. If only you didn't have to attach a price tag of 50,000 dead to get it....

Dvorak may have a point..NOT!

"While I can't agree with his overall message, Dvorak does has a few good points in his article. The Mac market share is woeful and it is barely growing, if it is growing at all."(Via Mac Net Journal.)

Well, first off, I must cop to the fact that I haven't read the Dvorak article in question, as I try to keep tripe out of my diet.

"Few good points" is one of the best descriptions of Dvorak's writing over the past few years that I've seen in recent memory.*

As far as the "Where's the marketshare?" question goes; I don't really care about marketshare. I care about number of installed Macs. Marketshare is a nice percentage of the machines that basically puts the machines being sold to corporations and into people's homes and tries to make soemthing meaningful out of it.

Don't get me wrong, I want the Mac's marketshare to go up. I also know that Apple couldn't survive it going up too fast.

Think about it. If Apple has currently, let's say, 3% marketshare right now. Then people, driven by viruses, iPod envy, a new sub-$500 Macintosh and a sudden influx of common sense start buying Macs. Apple's marketshare goes up to, say 6 percent. Is this going to impress anyone? Not really, other than that they doubled their marketshare. But also keep in mind what this would mean. Apple would then be faced with making twice as many systems as they currently make. Look at the iPod sales. I would rather see the Mac grow cleanly. Mind you, if Apple planned for a product that was a breakout success, that would be fine too.

But consider: the original iMac was a huge success...and it didn't grow Apple's Market share appreciably.

*Note: my issues with Dvorak's writing is that he writes for ratings. The guy called the NY Macworld as the Last Macworld Ever (maybe) over 4 years ago!? He stated in March of 2003 that Apple would go Intel in 12-18 month. Helloooo, how many months ago was that? He writes inflammatory BS and waits for the hits to come. That's why I don't link to his article.

I don't know why anyone wastes time with the self-important blowhard anymore.
