The San Jose Mercury-News reports on a rise in hit & run accidents in the city:

Last year, four out of 10 drivers who struck pedestrians on San Jose streets fled -- 114 drivers in all. The numbers reflect a surge of hit-and-run accidents over the last three years that has left San Jose police alarmed with a growing list of victims.

I have been trying to understand the increases in hit & run accidents as well. I am guessing that the faltering economy is playing a roll. If things are going badly, you are more likely to panic and run.

San Jose is not a pedestrian-friendly city. For too many years, the city's emphasis has been on moving cars quickly. Things have started to change in recent years with neighborhood input and the actions of groups like Walk San Jose. But, its clear from the rising number of hit & run accidents there is a lot more to do.

Walk San Jose has a listing of the Most Hazardous Intersections for Pedestrians in San Jose. While the data are a little out-of-date, they do make you pause.
