VTA wants BART to San Jose! Unfortunately many of the citizens of San Jose and the Santa Clara Valley get lost as the acronyms are tossed about.
As a public service I offer the following information. VTA is short for Valley Transit Authority, the entity the develops transit options in Santa Clara County. BART is short for Bay Area Rapid Transit, the emphasis is on rapid, though I am not sure why.
Since the VTA is sold on BART, I suggest a name change that merges the best of both acronyms. If you take the rapid out of BART and add it to the VTA, you come up with something like the Valley Rapid Transit Authority.
Unfortunately, VTA also runs busses and light rail (where rapid isn't really accurate, though I have seen some busses move at frightening speeds). Also after 15-20 years, it would be difficult for VTA to change its name and lose its important branding.
The solution of course is to keep VTA by using a contraction of "Valley Rapid Transit Authority". I think that "V'apid Transit Authority" could work! It is both catchy and descriptive.
