Beef Production Record Levels Expected
U.S. beef production will surge to new record levels this quarter (July through September), exceeding 7 billion pounds for the first time. Most of that production has been driven by increased in cattle weights. Although, the rate of slaughter weight increases has moderated in recent weeks, they are essentially record large. Looking ahead to the fourth quarter of 2002, a key to cattle prices will be to slaughter cattle weight.

No Sign Of Big Beef Cow Liquidation
Drought conditions in much of the Plains, West, and parts of the Southeast have caused many cow-calf operations to reduce cow inventories. Reports of large cow sales at various auctions this past spring and summer were common. As a result, many people assumed drought conditions were forcing a large liquidation in the nation[base ']s cow herd. Well, a massive liquidation could still take place, but it certainly hasn[base ']t yet.
