David Watson has an interesting perspecitve on open source development. Nice looking blog, too.

Notice the results of the referrer script he is using in the right hand column. David provides a link to the script's author where you can find the script and instructions for using it. I'm going to have to take a look at that.  11:16:18 AM

Have you tried one of the new DVD-Recorders for recording television programs?

They are way cool.

I became interested when I wanted to archive some programs that were on my TiVo. My TiVo had begun to fill up with saved programs, and I needed to do something fast if I wanted to catch the next episode of "The Screen Savers" before the TiVo overwrote the show with something else.

I found an open box Panasonic DVD Recorder at Best Buy for almost half price. It uses the same format DVD-R as my Mac and it can even record video to DVD-RAM disks. The Philips was almost twice as much, and it uses the DVD+R format (notice the plus sign) disks, so that device would have required me to stock two different types of recordable DVD disks. Plus, I can buy the DVD-R disks at Meritline for about $1.09 each in bulk.

With the Panasonic DVD Recorder I have been archiving programs on my TiVo to DVD and it is really slick. I can do either unattended recording, or I can watch the program and delete the commercials while I record.

I have been very happy with the quality of the recordings and the TiVo and DVD Recorder make a great pair. Too bad my TiVo doesn't have a built-in DVD Recorder. Now that would be the "bee's knees"-- to be able to archive programs on the TiVo without first having to convert the digital signal to analog and then back again to digital. Maybe someday the entertainment industry will let us do that, but I'm not holding my breath.

I really wish there were a convenient way to blog when I wasn't sitting at my Mac laptop, an iBook. Occasionally I think of something that would be appropriate to add to my blog, but usually I am sitting in the car, at a restaurant, or waiting in line somewhere. By the time I get back to my machine, the desire to record the thought has left me.

A desktop would be worse... I would really have to be tethered to the desktop location to be able to blog. At least with the laptop, I can take it with me.

I guess I could carry my Newton around and record my thoughts there, then send the files to the email account Radio watches for updates. But still, writing on the Newton screen is a little painful (even as good as the Newton's handwriting recognition is). I have a keyboard for my Newton, but the whole contraption becomes a little unwieldy.

My dream blogging tool: An iPod. Imagine that you could enter text into your iPod using the jog wheel and select button. Then, when you sync your iPod with your Laptop or desktop machine, it would also sync with your copy of Radio and post your updates to your blog. That would be cool. Even so, I wonder how painful it would be to enter long text using the jog wheel.

Isn't it interesting that after all these years, the best interface we have for entering long text into a computer is still the QWERTY keyboard?  10:51:07 AM

Apple updated it's Upgrade Policy for people who purchase a retail copy of OS X between July 17, 2002 and the day they ship Jaguar.
