Down the Great Unknown by Edward Dolnick: Good discussions of Civil War background, logistics, personalities, landscape, white water technique, geology for the John Wesley Powell-led trip down the Colorado. The prose is over the top sometimes, and the metaphors more mixed than the contents of the expedition boats after running a rapid.But it was enough to renew my commitment to avoid white water at all costs. I still prefer Wallace Stegner's Beyond the Hundredth Meridian, even though it does not give nearly as much detail on the trip itself. Stegner's prose is leaner, tighter, more thought-provoking. 9:22:46 PM |
