DNA yields dodo family secrets. Analysis of preserved dodo DNA uncovers the extinct bird's family tree, Oxford researchers reveal. [BBC News: sci/tech]

Now we know which species the dodo is most closely related to - another bird that become extinct. A real problem with animals that live on islands is that their isolation removes them from active competition and struggle. This makes them very weak when it comes to changing environments.  4:27:11 PM
