Thoughts on biotech, knowledge creation and Web 2.0

[John Robb's Radio Weblog] is a great blog. And he is a Flashman fan. My father turned me on to the Flashman books back when there were only 3 of them. There are now 11. What a great way to learn history. A great series about a scoundrel who just happened to be present (usually by accident while running away from something else) at almost every single major event between 1840 and 1880.  10:13:21 PM

DNA sheds light on life in the Old West. Nando Times Mar 4 2002 5:41PM ET [Moreover - moreover...]

I guess drug use can have some important side effects particularly archealogical!! I liked the reference to CSI. That program, while entertaining, sure makes DNA work look easy!!  10:03:18 PM

One Lifetime Is Not Enough for a Trip to Distant Stars. New York Times Mar 4 2002 7:18PM ET [Moreover - moreover...]

Robert Heinlein told us all about how to do this something like 50 years ago. So did James Blish and many others. I did note the Robert Forward, one of the speakers, is a science fiction author.  10:01:04 PM

Experts: Human pesticide tests unethical, useless [Reuters Health eLine]

This sort of stuff makes me mad. Give students and jobless people in Scotland organophosphates!! Would you take pesticide in order to help a chemical company get around safety guidelines? I <> think it would raise ethical questions. How long do they follow the students or do they just check to see whether they keel over after 18 days? I mean, what about long term effects of exposure, particularly of children? And paying them up to $600 PER DAY for 18 days. I wonder what sorts of releases these people have to sign? I'd better stop before I get more upset!!  9:55:37 PM

Celera: A Biotech That Needs a Boost. Business Week Mar 4 2002 10:07AM ET [Moreover - moreover...]

Celera sells animal genomics unit to MetaMorphix.Mar 4 2002 7:48AM ET [Moreover - moreover...]

Lots of info on Celera. With Venter leaving, they continue to sell off or remove all the stuff that made them a little different. Now they are going to do drug discovery, just like 1000 other companies. Only with a burn rate of $150 million. They have 6 years and are starting from scratch. Not a good probability. Glad I did not by at $200 or $80 or $40!!  9:43:53 PM

Office, bedroom reveals personality traits: study [Reuters Health eLine]

What a surprise. Of course people's personal spaces match their personalities. Wow. But where does this research lead us? I mean, people that do not take a bath probably do not have as many friends as those who do. This is the sort of stuff that Proxmire used to give his Golden Fleece awards to. Of course, most likely the press release just a lousy job with the point of the research. It happens a lot.  9:32:25 PM

Well, Final Fantasy X has just been taking up way too much of my freetime. That and my son's baseball, soccer, honor band. Plus having a spouse out of time. Hope to post some tonight.  9:15:41 PM
