Bush Spits on Vietnam Vets. From 1988:

CONNIE CHUNG: The problem, though, would be is if, indeed, made several phone calls or some people made phone calls on his behalf to get him into the National Guard. I mean, did that happen to you? Were you...
DUBYA (interrupting): No. I don't think so. But in those days, people were going into the service all different branches. And if you want to go into the National Guard, I guess sometimes people make calls. I don't see anything wrong with, a matter of fact I'm glad he served his country. And serving in the National Guard is serving in the military. They probably should have called the National Guard up in those days. Maybe we'd have done better in Vietnam.

...and, yes, though he was never called to Vietnam, as cmdicely reminds us, his unit was actived to defend our airspace against surprise atttack and he didn't bother to show. [Eschaton]

Of course, if they had called up the National Guard, GW would have made sure his daddy's friends kept hi from going. They got him into the champagne unit and they helped him get out. Must be nice, especially when people were getting killed. Then to say that if the Guard had been sent, things might have turned out differently. That sure sounds fair ;-)  comment []10:42:09 PM

Certainly it is.... Certainly it is one of the lesser threads in this controversy, but let's note for the record that RNC Chair Ed Gillespie told what was almost certainly a knowing falsehood today in an email sent out to the GOP faithful... [Talking Points Memo: by Joshua Micah Marshall]

Yep. The head of the RNC lied in an email, making things up that he knew were not true. Let's remember what Henry Wallace said in 1944:

The American fascists are most easily recognized by their deliberate perversion of truth and fact. Their newspapers and propaganda carefully cultivate every fissure of disunity, every crack in the common front against fascism. They use every opportunity to impugn democracy.
Between this and Cheney's remark that a vote for Kerry is a vote for the terrorists, sounds like a pretty good description.  comment []10:25:29 PM

"Elect us or die...". I had never seen The (Illustrated) Daily Scribble before, but based on this example, I have to pay more attention. (Via J-Walk)

[Sid's Fishbowl]

Sure Cheney will say this any day now. His rhetoric is to divide Americans as much as possible. A vote for Kerry is a vote for terrorists... They would have more credibility if they had actually done anything to show they know how to effectively deal with the world today. Iraq looks more and more like the lack of a coherant plan for victory was a cornerstone of their policy. They do not even care about Bin Laden (Bush never mentioned him at the convention and has said he does not even thik about him any more). It is all about winning now. Anything they do is fair game, even telling <45% of the country they are traitors for not voting Republican.   comment []4:37:41 PM

Kitty Kelley's Shocking Revelations

The book is not even out yet, but The Poorman has the dirt that will suposedly be coming out soon in the media if they actually serve as an independent check on Executive power.  comment []4:20:17 PM

Dances With Frances

A very vivid description of living through a hurricane. Having lived through some while in Houstin, and making it through Iniki in Hawaii while on vacation (!), the sheer destruction of such storms is amazing.  comment []10:57:59 AM

Another shot at humor in these times. Read it to the end.  comment []10:09:58 AM

Bush: 'Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over'

This atricle was funny when the Onion originally ran it in January 2001. But the hyperlinks how how remarkably prescient it was. The Onion did a better telling us what this Adminstration would do than any pundit has. It is somewhat horrifying toseen satire actually become real. Only in America.  comment []10:05:53 AM
