Some more examples of how Republicans in lorida are working to intimidate and weaken minority voters. Since we not have voting rights laws, they simply find ways not to count the vote. Or to use the police to scare people away from voting. What a lovely state run by Jeb Bush, whose office has direct responsibility for all of this. What a Grand Old Party!! Get elected by keeping people from voting. Used to be that was what the Democrats did. But that was before Nixon's Southern strategy was created, letting the racists and bigots know that they would be welcome here, in the GOP. That the GOP would take on the role of preventing Americans from voting if the Democrats no longer would. That only non-Republican vting groups would be harrassed, intimdated and prevented from voting.
There used to be some moderate Republicans, some politicians with a heart and a soul. Fiscally conservative and socially liberal. The Republicans gave us Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt. Now there are only ideologues and weasals, those whose view of being a true American is by preventing some other American from voting. A political philosophy of winning at all cost is a losing proposition. Eventually it will turn because it requires a moral relativism that is too repugnant to most people. I am just afraid of how much damage can be done before htis cancer is removed. Despotism seldom goes without tremendous pain and suffering. 11:32:40 PM

Read this link. I truly believe that history will look at those events of 2000 with total disbelief in the reckless disregard for the rule of law, the Constitution and the separation of powers. That decision did not solve things and very well may have opened up a can of worms that will continue to harm us for a long time. At least if we are still a representative democracy. Their apparent craven political attitude and disregard for the rule of law demonstrates just how far the Supreme Court has fallen from its former position. About as far as the Executive and the Legislative branchs. We live in a time where we have mental midgets for politicians when the world requires giants. If the US is unable to find these leaders (and I am not convinced that Kerry is the one but he is a necessary start), then the long experiment called America could be on the wane.
I chose to believe that at some point, enough people will see what has happened and work to change it. We have done it in the past. We have brought forth great leaders. Perhaps someday, we will have to carve another one on Mt. Rushmore, since that is where every other leader who altered our course has been placed. I just hope to God that millions are not killed before we get to see that new edifice. I hope I am still alive to see it. 11:17:43 PM

Lawn Chair. Xeni Jardin:

BoingBoing reader and furniture afficionado Fun Furde says, "The eco-friendly Terra is a lawn chair made out of your own lawn. You can grow your own for just $115, plus some dirt and grass seed." Link
Reader CJ Cramer says, "It looks like all that Nucleo is selling is the idea and the cardboard form for your dirt. Why not build your own form? ReadyMade Magazine had their take on this idea some time back." Link

Yes, but how do you get your lawnmower around and on it? 6:11:09 PM

1971 Federal Voting Rights Act. Atrios dug this up: Sec. 1971. - Voting rights (a)... [Daily Kos]
A nice story of how voter rights can easily be removed by partisan state officials. Not just in Florida but in other states, such as Ohio. In most every case, it is a Republican official working to disenfranchise Democratic registrations. What a wonderful party! I certainly have not read of anyone trying to throw out registrations from evangelical Christians. 6:07:30 PM

Red states feed at the trough. We have already discussed it at length, but you can... [Daily Kos]
Nice to see that the 'liberal' states provide most of the federal money that the 'conservative' states take. Just think, if we all were red states there would be no money for anyone from the federal government. That would sure be nice, right? You red states just be glad there are still so many rich, blue states to give you a fedearl teat to suck at. 6:04:26 PM

Microsoft Says Buy New Windows or Be Unsafe. CNet: Microsoft: To secure IE, upgrade to XP. Microsoft this week reiterated that it would keep the new version of Microsoft's IE Web browser available only as part of the recently released Windows XP operating system, Service Pack 2. The upgrade to XP from any previous Windows versions is $99 when ordered from Microsoft. Starting from scratch, the operating system costs $199. That, analysts say, is a steep price to pay to secure a browser that swept the market as a free, standalone product. So much for the notion that Microsoft might ever turn over a new leaf.
A company with more than $50 billion in cash at the end of the last quarter is refusing to help its customers, despite the company's song and dance about wanting security to be the top priority. The stance is even worse when you consider that XP is basically just an upgrade of Windows 2000 -- built from the same code base, that is. There might be a small case to be made for orphaning earlier versions of Windows, which are very different code, but this is just too much.
Plenty of enterprise customers are doing just fine with Windows 2000. Microsoft's message to them is "screw you; upgrade or face the consequences." Installing Mozilla or Opera isn't sufficient, because IE components have been boiled into the OS and will be launched even if users don't want them to.
Again, we see why Microsoft should have been broken up -- and why the browser should be a separate application. [Dan Gillmor's eJournal]
I'll bet a lot of those guys who were happy to see Ashcroft's Justice dept. roll over for MS on the antitrust issue are not so happy now. In order to get a safe browser, since IE is really part of the OS now, you have to upgrade, at the cost of several hundred dollars. Ain't America great? Sell a defective product, lacking in proper security, and then rip everyone off for more money to upgrade. And of course, there is no warranty that this new ersion will be any better. But I am sure they will have a newer version that you will be required to upgrade to in order to be safe. What a load!! This will drive people and cos. to Unix based approaches. Security problems are minimal and you are not hooked into the maw of a uber-capitalist company of the worst stripe. 5:58:36 PM
